How to Create a Blog: Step-By-Step Guide with Pictures

Just follow the simple steps below, and your blog could be ready in 20 minutes

Steps to making a blog

The Best Guide On How To Start A Blog

STEP 1: Know WHY you want to start a blog

When you know your destination, getting your direction becomes easier, right?
People start blogs for different reasons. Today, blogging is a great way to:
  • Become a better person. Blogging helps you think clearer, communicate with intentionality and build your creative flair.
  • Improve your writing. Writing proficiency comes with regular practice and starting a blog helps you write regularly
  • Make your voice heard. Gone are the days when only powerful politicians and wealthy businessmen could air their views. Now, you, too, can!
  • Make a difference. You want to help people take control of their personal finance? Start your own blog. You wish people would exercise more, take healthier meals and rest better? Start a blog.
  • Get published. The world is changing, and traditional publishers are falling into irrelevance. Smart authors now make a blog, build a loyal audience and publish their works. This approach works always.
  • Make money. It takes time and commitment but people make real money from blogs. I’ve made tens of thousands of dollars myself from blogging. And many folks I’ve taught how to create a blog are doing fine too.
If you’re still undecided, see: 34 Reasons Why You Should Start A Blog. (opens in a new  tab)
You can start a cool blog for any or all of the above purposes. Just use this simple guide, and you’ll see how easy it is.

STEP 2: Decide WHAT your blog will focus on

People start different classes of blogs.
Travel blogs. Vegetarian blogs. Romance blogs. Writing blogs. Marketing blogs. Political blogs. Religion blogs. Fashion blogs. Photography blogs.

So… what type of blog should you start?

What will be the focus or theme of your blog? This theme is called a niche –– and you should have one.
The best is to choose a niche you’re passionate about. Blogging is to be enjoyed. You know, there’s fulfillment in connecting with others and providing helpful information. You’ll experience this joy, and be able to do it for long, if you’re passionate about what you blog about.
When I finally launched my first blog, I found I was really passionate about writing and publishing. So I made that my niche and was able to connect with, learn from and impact many nice people. I even made money from it. I was fulfilled.

What are your hobbies?

What do you feel happy doing? What are you always excited to talk about to your friends?
Is it fashion, technology, entrepreneurship, leadership, food, traveling, relationship, movies or fiction? That’s probably what you should be blogging about. If you’re passionate about it, you can keep sharing useful information about it.
Create a blog today, and talk about what you love, what you know, and what you’re learning. It’s easy, and you CAN do it.

STEP 3: Decide WHICH of the blogging platforms you’ll use

The question, “How do you start a blog?” has many alternative answers. You can do it on blogging platforms like:
  • Blogger: e.g. yourfashionguy.blogspot.com
  • Hosted WordPress: e.g. yourfashionguy.wordpress.com
  • Self-Hosted WordPress: e.g. yourfashionguy.com
The first two options are free. But they’re also clumsy and ugly, don’t you think?
If your interest is to start a blog for business, a self-hosted WordPress blog is more professional. If it’s to do it for a cause or as a hobby, a self-hosted WordPress blog is more elegant.

The free blogging platforms aren’t really free.

They come with TONS of annoying limitations that just enslave you. Here’s 5 of them:
Limit #1: if you think the companies allowing you to create a blog on their blogging platforms for free do so because they love you, you’re wrong. They only do so to make money off of you. That’s why they put up adverts on your blog and ask you to pay to enjoy upgrades. Go for a self-hosted blog so you won’t be a wheel in a car working to make another company rich.
Limit #2: you’re not allowed to do affiliate marketing on free blogs. Some of them further prohibit Google Adsense and other cool ways to make money blogging. That’s not how to start a blog rightly.
Limit #3: you can’t use any of the thousands of amazing plugins and themes available to a self-hosted blog. After making a blog, plugins help you extend the functionality of the blog, the same way apps extend the functionality of a phone. Imagine having a phone without being able to install and use apps. Is it cool to live in a house you’re prohibited from painting and designing? If it’s not, then it sucks to have a blog without being able to use a theme on it.
Limit #4: you can’t use a custom email like John@YourFashionGuy.com. That’s not cool. You deserve something better.
Limit #5: on free blogging platforms, your blog can be deleted at anytime if the company’s server mistakes your blog for a spam, or if you accidentally violate their rules. And guess what – you have no remedy if that happens.
So the smart choice is to go with a self-hosted blog.

How much does a self-hosted blog cost?

Turns out, not much.
What you’ll pay to set up your blog is less than a movie ticket. First, you’ll need a domain name – usually sold for $15 but I’ll tell you how to grab it for FREE.
Second, you’ll need a hosting account which costs less than $72 for the first year.
I’ll show you how easy both steps are in a moment.

STEP 4: Decide which web host to use

In my many years of creating and managing blogs, I’ve learnt from bitter experiences that NOT many web hosts are awesome. I’ve used some big name web hosts in the past, and while they make sweet promises, their services are not really that good.
  • Their servers often had issues and make my sites load slowly and go down too often (this gave me nightmares in day time)
  • Their customer care agents were often too lazy, clueless or too busy with other things to properly offer a help when I needed it
  • They do some aggressive, spammy marketing like installing plugins or placing their links on my websites without my consent

Why Web Hosting Hub is reliable

#1: they provide 24/7 customer support through chat, phone, or email and in my experience, their customer service reps are helpful, polite and professional.
#2: they guarantee and provide an amazing server uptime of 99.9%. Very few web hosts can match that feat.
#3: they give you a free domain name – some web hosts sell a domain name for $15 per year.
#4: their service is extremely easy to use, and specifically tailored for WordPress blogs. Whether you’re an expert or a non-geek, they’ll make your experience memorable.
#5: they offer unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth, and unlimited email accounts.
#6: they’re inexpensive. When you use the discount link on this page, you’ll SAVE some extra money and pay less than $72 for the first year.
Disclosure: I am an affiliate of Web Hosting Hub and if you sign up through any of the links on this page, I may get a little commission (at no extra cost to you). But this didn’t influence my recommendation, because all hosting services have similar programs. I recommend Web Hosting Hub because I have personal experiences with them and honestly believe they offer amazing quality. And, I’ve been able to get a special discount for my readers who use any of the discount links on this page.
#7: they have a “one-click WordPress blog” installation, so you can install WordPress with few clicks.
#8: they offer a 90-day money-back guarantee. So if you start a blog today and decide later that blogging is not something you want to do again, you can cancel your account and get a refund.

STEP 5: How to create a blog using WebHostingHub

First, go to WebHostingHub and click “Order Now.”

On the next page, choose your hosting plan. If you’re a starter, I’d go with “Spark.”

On the next page, enter the domain name you want to register for free, choose the domain extension (I’d go with “.com“) and click “Search Domain”. If you already have a domain name, enter it on the tab to the right.

If the domain name you’ve chosen is already taken, you’ll be prompted to choose another domain name. If it’s available, you’ll see the page below. WHOIS Privacy is optional. Unless you absolutely want to be anonymous, I’d uncheck it and save $9.99. Click “Continue“.

On the next page, enter your personal details.

Still on the same page, scroll down and you’ll see the optional “Automated Secure Backups“. I’d choose “No Thanks” to save $12 annually but it’s up to you.

Scroll down and check “Install WordPress“. This saves you some time.

Scroll down and choose the duration of your hosting plan. If you’re just starting out, I’d go with Spark for 12 months. Enter your payment information:

Agree to the terms and conditions, check that all your information is correct and click “Purchase“.

The next page shows that your order is successful. And within few minutes, WebHostingHub would email you a username and password for your WordPress installation.
Congratulations! That’s all it takes to create a hosting account with WebHostingHub.

STEP 6: Login to your new blog and start blogging

Open a new browser tab and go to “http://YourNewBlog.com/wp-admin” (replace “YourNewBlog.com” with your blog domain name). Login with the username and password you’d have received by email in step 5 above.
creating a blog - Web Hosting Hub
You’ll see your blog dashboard. This is the “back side” of your website from where you set everything that your readers see on the “front side”.
Look to the left of your dashboard and you’ll see menus.
If you want to publish a new post on your blog right away, that’s totally fine. The post doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be published, to get you started. So go ahead and do it.
Hover the mouse on “Posts” and click “Add New” from the sub-menus that pop out.
Create a new WordPress post
Add the title of your post in the first tab and the content in the second tab.
Write a new blog post
Hit “Publish”.
When the next page loads, click “View post” to see how your new post appears to your readers.
View your new blog
Woo-hoo! That’s all there is to creating a blog. 20 minutes is all you need.
Next, it’s time to take your new blog from good to great

The Evolution of Blogging
  • 2016
Today, news blogs rival mainstream media
Social media has made blooging more interactional
  • Niche blogs such as Mashable and TechCrunch brought blogging to the mainstream in the 21st century
    2001
  • 1999
    1997
The invention of the word was a joint effort between John Barger, who coined the term “weblog” in 1997 as a shortened version of “logging the Web,” and Peter Merholz, who truncated the term to “blog” in 1999.
  • 1994
The first blog is credited to a Swarthmore College student named Justin Hall, who in 1994 created the site Links.net. However, the term “blog” didn’t enter our lexicon until several years later.
This section provides background information to help you understand the basics of blogging. We also describe a number of different benefits of blogging, how to choose your niche and blogging topic.

What is a blog?

A blog (shortened from the phrase "weblog") is known as many things—a digital magazine, diary, newscast, collector's meeting place, a showcase for your art, information sharing, teaching hub, place to learn and...well, almost anything you want it to be. A typical blog combines text, images, videos and links to relevant pages and media on the Web. Blog readers can leave comments and communicate with the author. In fact, dialogue and interaction are a popular part of a blog's success.

The benefits of blogging

Become a better writer and thinker

Once you start blogging, you'll find yourself becoming a better writer and thinker. Mastering content takes creative thought. When you become immersed in creating great pieces of content for your blog, your writing, thinking and research skills improve in the process.

Establish yourself as an expert

6.7 million people blog on blogging sites and
12 million people blogs via social networks
Blogs are wonderful tools to help people establish themselves as experts in a field or niche. We all have some kind of interest and expertise to share with others. If you’re able to produce great content on your blog and/or have a unique point of view on the topic, then be assured that your future audience will recognize it and reward you for it. With a bit of effort, you too can become an authority in the area of your interest.

Increase your self-confidence

The more involved you become with blogging, the more your creative juices will flow. That's one reason why blogging is so popular. As you gain knowledge about your topic, the confidence you’ll build in your followers and most importantly, in yourself, will soar. All of this leads to increased creativity. Keep an open mind and enjoy your new-found confidence in your own abilities!

Make friends and have fun

With practice and a little effort, you can easily build your base of blog fans and followers. As you become known as an expert in your niche, you can inspire, encourage and help your followers make a difference in their own lives. Along your blogging journey, you will make new friends and connections throughout the world. If you like to travel, that means a lot of couches are available for you to snooze on while winging your way around the globe!

Make money from your blog

Blogging would become your passion but you can also have financial benefits. Many authority bloggers are able to make a living from blogging. There are many ways to monetize your blog. You can place ads and receive compensation from the companies by promoting their products and services. Or you can sell your own digital products and merchandise.

How to choose a perfect niche

Before you start your own blog and move forward to become a successful blogger try to attain the highest form of knowledge in the niche/topic of your choice. So pick the one that appeals to you—the one you are passionate about and most interested in. Aspire for success, happiness, security and recognition. By choosing your niche of interest and having your own point of view you’ll be able to position and differentiate your blog from the competition.

Brainstorm to find your topic

Following is a process that can help you determine which niche is best for you:
  • Make a list of your interests or hobbies. Which topics fascinate you? List them all, for instance: golf, fishing, yoga, playing games or cooking.
  • Next, list accomplishments you are proud of, such as musical talent, artistic talent or sports achievements.
  • Now, list difficulties you have overcome or defeated, such as: losing a significant amount of weight, recovering from a financial setback or managing a disease.
During the course of this exercise, you will get a better feeling for the topics that resonate with you. The ones that you are most passionate about are the best candidates for your niche. Read this article on How to choose a niche for more information.

The 5 easy steps to launch a blog successfully:

  • Choose a blogging platform (self-hosted recommended)
  • Decide on a domain name
  • Get a hosting plan
  • Install blogging software (CMS)
  • Pick design and layout (theme)

Choosing a blogging platform

At this stage, you’ll need to determine the blog-management platform/tool you want to use. We recommend that you set up your blog on one of the self-hosted platforms. But before you make the decision, let us describe each option below in more detail and talk about the pros and cons.
For in-depth reviews of different blogging platforms visit this page.
When it comes to starting your blog you have the following options: free, freemium and self-hosted (recommended) platforms.

Free platforms

For many new bloggers, the availability of free blogging platforms such as Blogger or Tumblr is tempting. The benefits include being free and quick to start. But having a blog name in this form—yourname.blogspot.com or yourname.tumblr.com, is the sign of an inexperienced beginner who likely won't be taken seriously.

By keeping your blog on a free platform, you let the platform own your name. You’ll be subject to their rules and restrictions, they may limit or prohibit ads on your blog, or they may even place their own ads on your blog. If you're serious about blogging, you’ll want to move away from this option.

Freemium platforms

Freemium means you’ll have a trial period before you have to start paying (costs vary from $5 to $30 per month). Several platforms are available. One of the most popular is TypePad. This platform focuses on ease of use for writing, but customization options are limited and it lacks certain features of value to bloggers.
By default, your TypePad blog name will look like this: yourname.typepad.com. It's not always the best option if you’re trying to build the name and brand for your blog. However you could point your own domain (purchased through any domain registrar) to TypePad blog.

Self-hosted platforms

Self-hosted platforms allow you to run a blog on your own domain. Aside from following your domain registrar and web hosting company's rules, you’re fully in charge of your blog and its contents.
You have number of choices when it comes to a self-hosted blog system (also called Content Management System or CMS).
The blog set up is called self-hosted because you will use your own web hosting space and name for your blog. This normally costs $4 to $8 per month for the web space (hosting account), depending on the company you choose, and $12 to $15 per year for the name (domain). The actual CMS is usually open-source and free.
Although we mentioned some free blog-hosting options, the best course of action is to own your blog, especially if you will be using your own copyrighted material (articles, drawings, photos, etc.). Pay a small amount of money every month, about the same as a Starbucks coffee, and you will build your own equity. If you plan to sell products, services, music or anything else via your blog, then paid hosting is the best way to go. Many hosting providers can help you maintain an ecommerce blog.

One of the best and most well-known self-hosted content management systems (CMS) is WordPress.org, powering 25.4% of all websites in the world and responsible for over 76.5 million blogs, also recommended by 99% of the blogging blogging experts we’ve surveyed

How to Set Up a Self-Hosted Wordpress Blog

To get your new self-hosted blog started, you need to decide on two important things: a domain name and a web hosting provider.

Domain name

Your domain name will be the name by which you will be known online, no matter what niche you choose. It’s the unique address of your blog on the Internet. Your domain will be yours as long as you continue paying the annual fee ($10 - $15 for .com domain).
Users who know your domain/URL (uniform resource locator) can simply type it in their browser's address bar. Others will be able to discover your blog through search engines such as Google and Bing, so you definitely need to find a unique moniker. Make sure you love your original domain name—you’ll face a number of challenges if you decide to change it down the road.

Types of domain names

299 million domain names registered globally
Up to 75% of all websites are “.com” domains
Just as you and your business have a physical address, your domain name needs one too. It may be the highly popular "dot com" or it may be country or niche specific. From .us (United Sates) to .co.uk (United Kingdom) and from .guru (yes, for life coaches) to .sport (for sports related domains), these top level domains (TLDs) are added to any domain name in order to point to their location. The general rule is to go for a "dot com" domain, but some of the other extensions can work. For example "dot net" or "dot me."
In the end, it's about being memorable, so if a different extension or country code helps you be memorable, then break the rules!

Web hosting

After choosing a domain name, selecting reliable hosting services will be one of the most important decisions you make. To a great extent, the functionality and performance of your blog will depend on your hosting provider. The host makes sure your blog is available 24/7 to potential readers and it’s where your files are stored online.
Most hosting companies also offer domain registration services. Some people keep their domain name with the registrar company, separate from the hosting account. We recommend keeping it all under your hosting account for hassle-free management and maintenance

How to choose a web hosting provider

How to choose a web hosting provider

The wrong web host can cause many problems with your blog. Just imagine choosing a mobile company that has no reception. Your web host is a major piece of the puzzle to maintaining a successful blog, therefore, it’s crucial that you choose a reliable provider. Often, when people are asked what services most important to look for in a good web host, they cite things like 24/7 phone and chat support, reliability and reputation. Good hosting providers offer additional features such as database support, back ups and free email. Most hosting companies offer similar options and features and as a beginning blogger, you won't have to go deeply into technical details to use them.

Add 2 Column Ad space at the top of Blog Post?

How to add Floating 300px X 250px Advertisement widget at the Middle of the Blogger template?

I have previously published Floating Adsense and other's ads at the left or right site of the Blogger template. And That ads widget was really highly demanded widget like Hot cake. For this reason I have planned to create another floating ads widget where you will able to display AdSense and any other advertiser ads code easily. And the main feature of this widget is that this will able to generate higher revenue from your Advertising agency. I have take this concept from popup Facebook widget that help us to get more Likes from visitors, similarly this advertisement widget will help the used to generate more income.

After adding this widget in your Blogger template it will appear at the middle of the Blog site. And until clicking on close button it will be visible to the viewers. So there are more chances to get click on advertisement. As a result you will able to maximize your income from advertisement.

Though this widget can be used in case of all advertising platform. But my suggestion is, not to use for Adsense. Because it will violate AdSense terms and condition by forcing a viewers to click on ads. So by using this widget if you get penalty from AdSense then I am not liable. But for other ads platform you can happily use and generate income rapidly.

ad banner
Though this widget will appear at the center of the Blogger template for this reason, I recommended to add 300px width X 250px Height ads. Because it won't be annoying the viewers. And the advertisement widget will float at the middle of the site, as well as it will stick to the position if viewers scroll down. So for adding this widget please follow the below steps-

Step #1: Log in to your Blogger Account and Go to your Blogger Dashboard
Step #2: Go to your "Layout" tab.
Step #3: Click on "Add a Gadget" then select "HTML/JavaScript" Gadget.
